I know this is not any news to anyone, but not all job interviews go well. Sometimes you nail it and sometimes you don’t. But sometimes the person doing the interviewing costs themselves a great employee! Here are three things you may want to think about when you are deciding whether or not this place might be the one you spend the next few years in!
THE INTERVIEWER GETS STUCK ON HOW MANY JOBS YOU HAVE HAD
I was in an interview where the person just could not get over that I had three jobs over the course of the last ten years. REALLY? Most progressive companies understand that talented people are always looking for new ways and new places to use their talent. I have heard some top business people say you should be looking for new opportunities every three to five years. Never mind that in today’s business climate of acquisitions and location changes, some of the movement on your resume may not have been your idea. If it’s a good company, they want to know what you can bring to the table. Not how long you sat on your butt AT a table.
DRESS CODE
Unless you are a top notched financial advisor facing customers, why would you want to work somewhere that requires strict business attire every day? Do tech geniuses create the NEXT BIG THING because they are wearing a tie? Do you really give better customer service over the phone while you are wearing a business suit? My beloved Starbucks, which by the way, IS a customer facing business, allows visible tattoos and some pretty creative hairstyles. They give some of the best customer service I have ever had. By the way, it doesn’t seem to be costing them much business, does it? Creative people like to express themselves. How open is the company to new ideas if your boss spends valuable time worrying whether your hair color is too red?
NO TECHNOLOGY
I am not talking everyone having a lap top, but I interviewed with a company not too long ago that was doing things the same way I was doing them when I started in Corporate World over 15 years ago. It can be fun going into a company and starting technology and even a department from scratch, but the problem is, at some point, you are going to run into the “we’ve always done it this way” zombies. Killing those zombies can be rewarding, but sometimes the stress and frustration of it all can get you to the point where you want to jump out the office window!
