Work Out Like A Cover Band?

A few weeks ago, I was taking a boot camp style class at my gym.  The instructor was trying to get everyone motivated, so he opened the session by screaming, “We are going to work out like rock stars! Not like some cover band!”

I wanted to scream, “Hey, time out Mr. Muscle Head!”  I was deeply offended, although I have to admit it was a great class!

Cover bands get a bad rap. After all, we don’t actually WRITE the music that we perform.  All we do is listen to someone else’s music and copy it.  Anyone can do that!

Not quite.  Most people don’t even think about the fact that in order to get it to sound close to what it originally was, you have to be as talented as the musicians who originally played on it.  Plus, you usually have to do it after bringing in and setting up your own equipment.  Not to mention sometimes having to run the sound from the stage.  I haven’t heard Katy Perry mention that she will be doing her own setup at the Super Bowl, so I don’t think that is going to be happening.

In less you are incredibly wealthy, you trust the cover band with the entertainment for some of the most memorable events of your life.  Your wedding, your 50th birthday party, your baby shower.  And most times, we absolutely nail it!

The cover bands are at your local dive, your favorite nightclub or the casino lounge you go to sit in after you have lost a couple hundred bucks at the blackjack table and just need a break.  We make you forget about what a lousy boss you have, that girlfriend who dumped you or the fact that your car needs another set of brakes.  We make you dance.  We play your favorite songs.  We entertain you.  We make memories with you.

The next time you have a free night and you aren’t sure what you want to do, go see a cover band. I am of course, totally partial to coming to see L.A. Lyon, but if you can’t make it to see us, check out someone else.  It might have you saying you are going to work out like a cover band!

2014: It was all about the fun

The holiday season is officially over.  The D-Man helped me put away all the Christmas decorations in between the football games today.  The only thing left is finding spots for a few gifts and Holiday 2014 is a happy memory.

It is now goal time, my version of New Year’s resolutions. 2014 was not a year of great achievements for me, but one of maintaining.  Maintaining everything except my pants size, something that is now moving to the number one spot for things to change in 2015.

It made me a little sad to look at all the things I didn’t accomplish, until I remembered.  Yes, there were moments of stress and not so good things, but in general, I got to spend time with a lot of great people. From the gigs with L.A. Lyon, to dinners with friends, trips to Las Vegas, Summerfest in Wisconsin and one of the best holiday seasons I can remember in a very long time, 2014 had more laughs and love than I had in a very long time! Also one reason why only one pair of jeans I own currently fit!

Tomorrow I will go back to work.  I will set some goals, try to move things in my life forward instead of staying status quo and hit the gym and the salad bar.  Put that list of creative projects in my head to paper and try to make 2015 the year of action.  But still make sure to make some room for what 2014 taught me.  2014 wasn’t all about the bass.  It was all about the fun!

Thanks for everyone’s support and wishing everyone a productive and love filled 2015!
